The DOE laboratory system is the most comprehensive research system of its kind in the world, and constitutes a critical strategic scientific and technical resource. The Office of Science has responsibility for 10 of the 17 DOE laboratories, helping to ensure they deliver exceptional scientific productivity benefiting the taxpayer. Each laboratory is operated by a non-governmental entity under a performance-based agreement known as a management and operating (M&O) contract. The SC Field Operations organization provides contract management and operational oversight for each laboratory, thereby ensuring they possess the sustainable infrastructure and management systems necessary for ongoing world leadership in basic scientific research.
