USA Science & Engineering Festival Kickoff Press Conference

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will participate in the first annual USA Science & Engineering Festival. The festival will be held on the National Mall, October 23-24, 2010. The event is geared to hands-on learning that will bring real science to our nation's youth. DOE will host booths, located in Section NM-2, and will feature the electronic bike, which shows how much power a person can generate using pedal power.

A preliminary viewing and press conference was held on Wednesday Sept. 29th at the Koshland Museum that was attended by select schools and dignitaries.

Students from a local middle school take a closer look at the energy generated by a classmate's pedaling.

"Science is the foundation of discovery and innovation that provides the platform to tackle many problems facing our world today," said Dr. Steven Koonin, DOE Under Secretary for Science. "This two-day Expo will be an excellent opportunity for teens, children and their families, and anyone with a curious mind, to learn more about natural resources and new technologies that will benefit this and future generations."

The DOE exhibit will also contain a variety scientific displays ranging from climate change to conservation, including a car that can run on water and sunlight. Participants include: Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Climate Research Facility, Joint BioEnergy Institute (JBEI), Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy (EERE), and National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).
