Call for Research Proposals at U.S. Leadership Computing Facilities for Advances in Science and Engineering

Proposals are now being accepted for the Innovative and Novel Computational Impact on Theory and Experiment (INCITE) program for the year 2013. INCITE supports high-impact scientific advances through the use of the U.S. Department of Energy Leadership Computing Facilities located at Argonne (ANL) and Oak Ridge National Laboratories (ORNL). By providing some of the world's most powerful supercomputing resources, namely the 10-petaflop IBM Blue Gene/Q Mira at ANL and the 20-petaflop Cray XK6 Titan at ORNL, INCITE enables researchers to address some of the toughest challenges in science and engineering, from biology to climate to materials to nuclear energy, to name just a few.

The INCITE program is open to US- and non-US-based researchers and research organizations needing large allocations of computer time, supporting resources, and data storage to pursue transformational advances in science, engineering, and computer science. Applications undergo a two-phase review process to identify projects with the greatest potential for impact and a demonstrable need for leadership-class systems to deliver solutions to grand challenges.

In 2012, 1.7 billion core hours were awarded to 60 projects, with an annual average allocation of 27 million core hours. For 2013 the INCITE program anticipates granting more than 5 billion core hours to scientists and engineers at universities, national laboratories, industry and other research organizations across the world. Typical per-project awards will range from 50 to 100 million core hours, but could range up to several hundred million.

Applications will be accepted only electronically starting April 11, 2012. Proposals will be accepted until a call deadline of 11:59 p.m. EDT on Wednesday, June 27, 2012. Awards are expected to be announced in November 2012.
