Director(s):
Michael Nastasi (8/2009 - 11/2011); Amit Misra (12/2011 - 7/2014)Lead Institution:
Los Alamos National Laboratory
Years:
2009-2014
Mission:
To understand, at the atomic scale, the interactions of defects at interfaces in materials subjected to extreme radiation doses and mechanical stress in order to synthesize new interface-dominated materials that can tolerate such conditions.
Research Topics:
nuclear (including radiation effects), defects, mechanical behavior, materials and chemistry by design, synthesis (novel materials), synthesis (scalable processing)
Materials Studied:
MATERIALS: metal, oxide
INTERFACES: metal/oxide, solid/solid
NANOSTRUCTURED MATERIALS: 2D, 3D, nanocomposites
Experimental and Theoretical Methods:
X-ray diffraction and scattering, electron microscopy, neutron diffraction and scattering, molecular dynamics (MD), density functional theory (DFT), monte carlo (MC), quantum mechanics, classical mechanics, continuum modeling, mesoscale modeling, multiscale modeling, extreme scale computing
