Dr. Claudia Cantoni joined the Materials Sciences and Engineering Division of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in September 2021 as program manager for the Experimental Condensed Matter Physics program.

Prior to BES, from 2016 to 2021, Claudia served as the commercialization program manager for the DOE’s Office of Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR). Prior to Federal service in the Office of Science, Claudia was a member of the R&D staff at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) for 14 years.

At ORNL, Claudia specialized in synthesis and characterization of complex, correlated electron quantum materials, working in several groups funded by BES. Claudia’s expertise encompasses deposition of oxide heterostructures, unconventional superconductors, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and spectroscopy. At DOE-SBIR/STTR, Claudia led several new initiatives to improve the programs, including the Phase I PI Meetings, which she introduced in 2017.

Claudia’s research has led to over 150 technical publications, including papers published in Nature Materials, Advanced Materials, and Physical Review Letters. Claudia holds 3 patents and has received 17 awards during her career, including 5 R&D 100 Awards.

Claudia earned her Ph.D from the University of Salerno in Italy and her M.S. from “Federico II” University in Naples, Italy.
