In 2001, Dr. Wilson started working for the Department of Energy as the lead project manager for the materials work funded by the Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) effort through the Office of Fossil Energy’s SECA program at NETL. Among many materials issues related to SOFCs, he organized and participated in collaborations to investigate the surface chemistry and electrochemical kinetics of perovskite cathode materials under the environmental extremes of high temperatures and oxygen activity gradients, including synchrotron work at the APS at ANL.

In 1989, Dr. Wilson began a faculty position in the Physics Department of West Virginia University and moved his synchrotron efforts to the NSLS at BNL. His interests in structure and property relationships at surfaces and interfaces led to UHV spectroscopy and microscopy instrumentation development work, both at WVU and through a small business venture.

Dr. Lane Wilson began his interest in materials physics in 1981 as an MIT undergraduate studying liquid crystals in high magnetic fields. He earned a Ph.D. from Stanford University, in the Applied Physics Department, performing research at the Stanford Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory investigating the structure of interfacial regions in amorphous thin film multilayers.
