Before joining Basic Energy Sciences (BES) in 2023, Mike was a Distinguished R&D staff member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), having also served as group leader in the Neutron Science Directorate for the Large-Scale Structures and (Magnetism) Reflectometry Groups. While at ORNL, he also held a joint faculty appointment in the Physics Department at the University of Tennessee. Prior to that he worked as a Member of the Technical Staff at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE) where he developed a user program in neutron reflectometry using polarized neutron beams for the DOE-BES user program at LANSCE. Mike has over 32 years of experience as both a user and innovator of neutron scattering tools and techniques to elucidate the origins of magnetism in quantum matter — primarily interface magnetism of thin film heterostructures. Mike is a Fellow of the Neutron Scattering Society of America and the American Physical Society. His professional society and technical governance activities includes serving as the 2019 President of the Materials Research Society, and Chair, Science Technical Advisory Panel (reflectometry) for the European Spallation Source.
