Dr. Mewes joined the Materials Sciences and Engineering Division of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences at the U.S. Department of Energy in June 2023 as program manager for the Experimental Condensed Matter Physics program

Dr. Mewes was a professor of Physics and Material Science at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, from 2005 until 2023. Before joining the Department of Energy Dr. Mewes was a Jefferson Science Fellow of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine. As a Jefferson Science Fellow, he worked in the Bureau of Diplomatic Security at the Department of State. In 2020 he was named Distinguished Lecturer of the IEEE Magnetics Society. In 2014 he received the IBM Faculty Award, and in 2011 he was a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Nanoscale Science and Technology at the National Institute for Standards and Technology in Gaithersburg. Before joining the University of Alabama, Dr. Mewes was a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Physics at Ohio State University in Columbus, OH

Dr. Mewes has published two book chapters and over 90 articles in peer reviewed journals on topics including epitaxial growth of magnetic thin films, exchange bias, influence of ion irradiation on magnetic properties, magnetic resonance force microscopy, broadband ferromagnetic resonance, magnetization dynamics, damping, and micromagnetics. He served on the International Advisory Committee for the IEEE Magnetism and Magnetic Materials (MMM) Conference series and the International Conference on Microwave Magnetics (ICMM). He organized and chaired the ICMM 2016 in Tuscaloosa, AL.

Dr. Mewes received his M.S. (Dipl.-Phys.) and his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. nat.) from the Department of Physics, at the University of Kaiserslautern in Germany.
