Dr. Mikhail (Misha) Zhernenkov joined the Scientific User Facility Division of the Office of Basic Energy Sciences (BES) at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) in October 2022 as a program manager for Neutron Scattering Facilities and X-ray Light Sources.
In 2013 Misha joined Brookhaven National Laboratory to build the Soft Matter Interfaces (SMI) beamline as a part of the NEXT project at National Synchrotron Light Source II. Since 2017, as a lead beamline scientist and a team lead at SMI, he focused on beamline commissioning, user support, and developing and broadening the user community in the areas of interface science, polymer and biomaterials, in-situ and time-resolved studies.
Prior to BNL, he held postdoctoral positions at Los Alamos National Laboratory’s Lujan Neutron Scattering Center and Argonne National Laboratory’s Advanced Photon Source, followed by a scientist position in semiconductor industry at Nanometrics Inc. in Silicon Valley.
His research has focused on many fields in soft and hard condensed matter, which led to more than 70 papers. He served on various committees and panels across DOE national lab complex and acquired the breadth of international experience at both neutron and synchrotron facilities.
Dr. Zhernenkov earned his Ph.D. in experimental condensed matter physics from the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research and Institute Laue-Langevin.
