Stephen C. Myers is honored for his development and implementation of the Regional Seismic Travel Time (RSTT) model integrating regional and teleseismic data to yield seismic event solutions with greatly improved location accuracy, and for its applications in nuclear explosion monitoring. The science of seismic nuclear explosion test monitoring is critical to the Department’s mission in nonproliferation, and Dr. Myers’ achievements in this area have led to a new standard in seismic nuclear explosion monitoring, which is the only technology available for detecting, locating, and identifying underground nuclear explosions worldwide. By developing and demonstrating new approaches to use seismic wave models for accurate determinations of the location of the event, he has fulfilled a critical national and international verification need required under the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT).
