Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology - Virginia Regional High School Science Bowl
Coach Catherine Scott is co-coach of the Science Bowl team and has taught at TJHSST since 2017. Prior to teaching she was a clinical associate professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where she was coordinator of graduate programs for aspiring teachers. In addition to serving as program coordinator, she taught math education courses and provided professional development workshops for experienced teachers at state and national conferences.
Co-coach Myra Spoden enjoys working with the TJHSST Science Bowl team and she considers it a privilege. She has been teaching at TJHSST for 23 years. Prior to teaching, she spent 15 years working for the IBM company.
Kaien Yang is a senior and is excited to come to NSB for the sixth consecutive year! As an avid tennis player and captain of his school's varsity tennis team, he enjoys playing doubles and betting on matches with his teammates. Academically, he's really into chemistry and had a blast attending the U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad Study Camp and RSI last year. In his spare time, he plays soccer and shares Spotify playlists with his friends.
Daniel Fu is a senior whose interests include physics, computer science, and math. He qualified for the USAPhO and reached the platinum division in USACO last year. Over the summer, he conducts research at The MITRE Corporation. Outside of academics, he rows on the crew team and writes programs to solve daily problems. He looks forward to his third time at NSB.
Isaac Lin is a junior whose favorite subjects are biology and computer science. He is an active member of his school’s Biology Olympiad team, and likes to read anatomy textbooks in his free time. Beyond high school, he would like to study neuroscience along with computer science. He also enjoys playing tennis, video games, and binge watching TV shows.
Samuel Wang is a sophomore who enjoys learning math. He qualified for the 2020 USAMO and got an honorable mention, earning a spot at the Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program. In his free time, he practices piano, plays video games, and writes in LaTeX. His favorite topics in math are number theory and combinatorics, and he hopes to pursue a related career.
Om Duggineni is a sophomore and thoroughly enjoys everything science and computer science. He is passionate about the possibilities at the intersection of AI/ML and sciences. He is conducting research whenever possible and pursuing research opportunities and mentorship. When he is not into science, he loves to bike, hike outdoors, read, and vacation with family. His favorite podcast is Hidden Brain. Om is excited to come back to the Nationals (he has been there twice so far with a middle school team and managed to get third & fourth place) and he hopes to help his team reap a victory.
