Timpview High School - Utah 4-H Regional High School Science Bowl
Coach Dinali Karunaratne has taught at Timpview High School since 2014 and teaches chemistry to tenth, eleventh, and twelfth-grade-students. She was raised in Sri Lanka and went to college at Institute of Chemical Sciences (Sri Lanka), Utah Valley University, and Arkansas State University. Coach Karunaratne has been working with the Science Bowl team for three years. She loves to spend her free time traveling. Her favorite place to visit is Yellowstone National Park.
Coach Jonathan Montgomery has taught geology, astronomy, and earth science at Timpview High School for seven years.
James Camacho is interested primarily in math, but he also does a little chemistry and computer science on the side. As with most qualifiers, he has placed well in various competitions: he is a five time AIME qualifier, Gold ranked in the USACO, and has been recruited for BYU's Putnam team. Besides academics, James enjoys playing the violin and piano, and running track and cross country. His current mile time sits at 5:03, but he hopes to break the five minute barrier soon. James' dreams for the future are varied; he wants to earn a billion dollars by starting his own business, teach middle schoolers competition math, or maybe become President of the United States. Realistically he'll probably settle for a job in computational mathematics.
Matthew Argyle is a junior with interests ranging from math, chemistry, computer programming, and forensics to cross country and wrestling. He is thrilled to have qualified this year at the national level in both the Science Bowl and Technology Student Association - Forensics competitions. In his spare time, Matthew is busy volunteering; he is an Eagle Scout with three Palms and serves as a youth mentor for a middle school FIRST Lego League team. Matthew is currently deciding whether to major in engineering or computational mathematics in college. Either way, he hopes his work will make a difference in someone else’s future.
Joseph Carlston is a sophomore who enjoys reading and playing video games. This is his fourth year participating in Science Bowl. He has also competed in various math competitions, such as the AMC and Utah State Math Contest. He intends to become an aerospace engineer after college, but is also open to the possibility of an occupation focused on mathematics, biological research, or something space-related besides aerospace engineering.
Aliza Cavender is a senior at Timpview High School who loves to play frisbee, rollerblade, and play the piano. This is Aliza’s first year participating in Science Bowl. Aliza is planning to attend Brigham Young University next fall; however, she is still trying to decide what she will study there. (She will likely study Chinese in addition to something in the physical sciences after returning from a 18-month mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.) After graduating, she plans to become a sarcastic science teacher who teaches students how to think scientifically. She is grateful to her teachers and family who have taught her and helped her achieve her goals.
Joseph Camacho is a junior who loves to play frisbee and read books. This will be Joseph's sixth year participating in Science Bowl and his fourth time qualifying for nationals. Joseph also competes in math competitions and has qualified for the USAJMO twice and the USAMO once. After graduating from high school, Joseph plans to major in mathematics. Already he has taken four math classes at a local university, including Introduction to Topology and Abstract Algebra I. Once done with college, Joseph plans to get a Ph.D. in math and become a professor.
