Alex Avila, Coach
Coach Alex Avila is a lifelong learner. He attended University of California: San Diego for his undergraduate degree and obtained his Master’s degree at the University of California: Los Angeles. Coach Avila has been a proud educator for over twenty years. He currently teaches computer science and mathematics, engineering, science, achievement (MESA) sponsored by California State University Los Angeles at El Sereno Middle School. During his free time he loves to tinker with various technologies and to see how he might bring his new learnings into his classroom.
Alejandro Villa
Alejandro Villa’s hobbies include model train collecting, music, swimming, and storytelling. He was very interested in joining the National Science Bowl team because he wanted to challenge himself and be a positive role model for others. Alejandro owns a dog and enjoys training her together with his brother. Alejandro would like to attend California Polytechnic at Pomona and major in computer science, psychology, business, or engineering. Upon completing college, he looks forward to a career in the field of engineering.
Ethan Valenzuela
Ethan Valenzuela is a seventh-grader who enjoys building various things. He is currently attending El Sereno Middle School in the STEM magnet program. He has contributed to the class in various projects including the creation of a robot, entering a hydrogen fuel cell car race and a JavaScript programming competition. Ethan dedicated this year to learning javascript at school in his mathematics, engineering, science, and achievement (MESA) class. He recently entered a competition in coding in which he placed first in the MESA Los Angeles Metro Division Championship. Ethan hopes to become a mechanical engineer in the future with a degree from the University of California: Los Angeles.
Amry Molina
Amry Molina is a seventh-grader at El Sereno Middle School. Some of her hobbies are crocheting, biking, creating new things, learning, taking pictures, drawing, and building. Her favorite subjects are math, history, MESA (mathematics, engineering, science, and achievement). Amry would like to be an architect because they get to create and build new buildings. This year, she just finished competing in the creation of a hydrogen fuel cell racing car that she named “Tracy”. She would like to go to Stanford University and major in some type of engineering field.
April Liang
April Liang is from El Sereno Middle School. Currently she is in the eighth grade and this is her first year in MESA (mathematics, engineering, science, and achievement). In elementary school, she was very interested in robotics. She joined the robotics club and participated for two years. During elementary school she learned coding with blocks. She also enjoys math and drawing. These hobbies carried on to her middle school years. She still has a deep love for math, robotics, coding, and drawing, in addition to science. This year April has participated in many MESA events, exhibiting great perseverance and gained a great deal of valuable experience from them. In the future she would like to graduate from the University of California: Los Angeles with a major in business and/or aerospace engineering.
Aidan Hernandez
Aidan Hernandez is a seventh-grader at El Sereno Middle School who likes first person view (FPV) drones and anything remote control of first person view related. Aidan dedicated this year to learning javascript at school in his mathematics, engineering, science, and achievement (MESA) class. He recently entered a competition in coding in which he placed first in the MESA Los Angeles Metro Division Championships. During his free time he has continued to find resources to learn Python, C++, HTML, and CSS. Aidan would like to get a scholarship to the University of California: Los Angeles and major in software development. For his future career, he would like to work for NASA for five years and then become a full stack developer for Google.
