The Office of Nuclear Physics (NP) in the Office of Science (SC) held the 3rd Workshop on Isotope Federal Supply and Demand. Workshop participation was limited to representatives of Federal agencies. The Workshop is to encourage interactions between Federal agencies and departments to avoid potential communication breakdowns that can lead to shortages of isotopes of critical strategic importance to the Nation. The workshop took place on Monday, November 3, 2014 at the Rockville Hilton, in Rockville, Maryland.
This Workshop provided a focus into the use, demand and supply of isotopes from a Federal perspective, in various areas including homeland defense, medicine, agriculture, and basic and applied research. Participants engaged in discussions of their sponsored activities and demands for isotopes. Discussions also included existing supplies of isotopes, and efforts underway to increase supply of critical isotopes. The output of this workshop served as input for a roadmap to increase isotope supply and mitigate shortages of critical isotopes.
The workshop was a 1 day meeting in Rockville, Maryland, in the suburbs of Washington D.C. Keynote speakers included Dr. Joel Rynes, Assistant Director of the Transformational and Applied Research Directorate, Domestic Nuclear Detection Office, Department of Homeland Security. Participating agencies discussed isotope demands important to mission achievement for the next five years. Presentations were also given on federal isotope supply and efforts to increase the supply of critical isotopes.
