Research

The Computational Science Research and Partnerships (CSRP) Division and the Advanced Computing Technology (ACT) Division support activities to effectively meet mission needs at the frontiers of science, including both data-intensive and computationally-intensive science. These activities include applied mathematics and computer science research to provide the foundation for increasing the capability of the national high-performance computing ecosystem and scientific-data infrastructure, and computational partnerships with disciplinary science to deliver some of the most impactful scientific computing and computational science advances in areas of strategic importance to the Nation.

Applied Mathematics

Image for Applied Mathematics ASCR Applied Mathematics supports basic research leading to fundamental mathematical advances and computational breakthroughs across the Department of Energy and the Office of Science missions including research in scalable algorithms and mathematical libraries, multiscale and multi-physics modeling, scientific artificial intelligence and machine learning, and efficient analysis of massive data sets.


Computer Science

ASCR Computer Science supports long-term, basic research on the software infrastructure that is essential for the effective use of the most powerful high-performance computing and networking systems in the country as well as the tools and data infrastructure to enable the exploration and understanding of extreme scale and complex data from both simulations and experiments. The Computer Science program also supports work on quantum computing and networking and other potentially-transformative computing paradigms.


Advanced Computing Technology

ASCR Advanced Computing Technology supports research focused on the development of emerging computing technologies such as Quantum Information Systems and neuromorphic efforts as well as investments in microelectronics in partnership with the other Office of Science program offices, Research and Evaluation Prototypes (REP), and ASCR-specific investments in cybersecurity.


Computational Partnerships

ASCR Computational Partnerships primarily supports the Scientific Discovery through Advanced Computing (SciDAC) program, which is a recognized leader for the utilization of high-performance computing for scientific discovery.


Cross Cutting Activities

The ASCR Research Division collaborates in cross cutting activities with the ASCR Facilities Division, with other programs under the Office of Science, with applied and national-security offices elsewhere in the Department of Energy, and with other Federal agencies. These activities include the Stewarding an Innovative Next-Generation Software Stack, the Energy Earthshot Research Centers, and Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) and Small Business Technology Transfer (STTR) programs.

ASCR is committed to developing a skilled and diverse workforce in computer science and applied mathematics as well as helping small business and innovators toward the commercialization of products of ASCR sponsored basic research. ASCR manages the Computational Science Graduate Fellowship (CSGF) program and participates in the Office of Science Graduate Student Research (SCGSR) Fellowships and Early Career Research programs. ASCR contributes to the Funding for Accelerated Inclusive Research (FAIR) and Reaching a New Energy Science Workforce (RENEW) initiatives in the Office of Science. The Lab Embedded Entrepreneurship (LEEP) is also instrumental to meeting ASCR's goal of investing in people.
